DIVING PENIDA

WHY IS IT SO SPECIAL ?

Nusa Penida, is ideally positioned in the Indonesian Throughflow (Arus Lintas Indonesia), a massive flow of water that passes from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean and deposits planktonic larvae in the waters, offering food to a high diversity of remarkable marine life.

You’ll get a chance at spotting the notorious Mola Mola (sunfish), and large pelagic fish such as manta rays, sharks, tunas, mackerels or cephalopods like reef octopuses and cuttlefish. You will see diverse scorpion fishes, stonefish, lionfish and let’s not forget the rich macro life sheltered by large healthy coral settlements.

For a fun sample of the marine life you can encounter check our Marine Life Gallery and train your eyes at spotting and identifying these creatures.

WHAT ABOUT CURRENTS, CAN ANYONE DIVE HERE ?

The Lombok Strait separates the Indonesian islands Bali and Lombok and is the second most important strait through which water is exchanged between the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean. It is one of the few passages in the world where measurements of up to one million cubic meter of water per second have been made !

So yes there are currents here and you might just realize, that when properly briefed and trained, they can be fun ! How about discovering the excitement of drift diving with the sound advice one of our instructors and become a more experienced and certified diver ?

In any case, there is also a large choice of dive spots accessible to beginners and less adventurous divers. The rule of thumb is to dive during slack tide (just before, during and after high tide), when for a short time the currents are not so strong or inexistent.

Rest assured that we will deliver the best dive experience possible ! Our schedules are carefully planned with tide tables, wind speed forecasts, the know how of our local captain and we will adapt to your abilities and comfort level.

WHAT ABOUT WATER TEMPERATURE ?

Nusa Penida is a natural barrier to the deep sea pacific waters coming from the north. So, yes it can get cold but it isn’t always the case. Water temperature roughly ranges from 18 to 28º C, depending on tides, season and dive sites.

You probably learned that body temperature loss is 20 to 25 five times faster in water than in air. You might also know that cold can aggravate the risk of decompression sickness, or simply makes a dive less enjoyable.

This is why our basic set of dive gear includes a 5mm wetsuit and neoprene socks that will keep you warm throughout the dive.

IN ONE WORD: AWESOME !

Nusa Penida’s geographical location might make for slightly more challenging dives with regards to temperature and currents, but will gratify divers with truly remarkable and almost unique marine life.

With the adequate SCUBA gear and the help of our experienced dive professionals you will make the most of Penida’s Marine Park and fill your eyes with wonders ! See you soon 😉
